Homemade Garbage Disposal Refreshers
What’s that sour smell in the kitchen? Is it coming from the sink? Why yes. Yes it is!
Has this happened to you?
If at times your sink doesn’t quite smell like a field of flowers, this post is for you!
Super easy to make, these refreshers freshen up your disposal like a crisp, spring day! The lemon in these produce a light, crisp smell to perk up your kitchen sink. Once made, just put into your disposal, run some water and run your disposal for a few seconds and voila!
Following instructions from the pin from PopSugar, you need only a few ingredients for these Homemade Garbage Disposal Refreshers: Baking soda, salt, liquid dish soap and a lemon!
Mix 3/4 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup salt. Then zest/grate the lemon into this dry mixture:
After zesting, now cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into this mix along with 1/2 teaspoon of your liquid dish soap of choice. Mix until it resembles a wet sand:
Then take a teaspoon or a small cookie dough scooper and scoop mounds onto parchment or waxed paper:
That’s it! Now just let dry overnight and put into a sealed glass container. Look how cute it is on my sink! You can actually see the lemon zest ready to freshen!
I am so excited to have these close by for the first offending odor. Bring it on!
My sink and I can report that This Pin Rocks!
Homemade Garbage Disposal Refreshers
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap
- 1 lemon
- Sheet pan
- Parchment paper
- Small spoon or scoop
- Sealable glass jar
Instructions
- Gather the ingredients for making the garbage disposal refreshers. Measure and add the baking soda and salt to a small mixing bowl, and give a stir, ensuring the mixture isn't lumpy.
- Now grate the lemon peel into the mixture along with adding the liquid dish soap.
- Slice the lemon in half, and squeeze the juice into the mixture. Continue stirring and adding juice until the mixture resembles course sand.
- Cover a sheet pan with parchment paper, use a small spoon or scoop to mold the half rounds, and then tap them out onto the pan. A rounded teaspoon measuring spoon works wonderfully. Continue molding the refreshers until the mixture is gone. Allow to dry overnight.

Does is have to be a glass container or will any Tupperware with a lid do?
Debbie says
Hi Heather! It certainly does not need to be glass. It can be a Tupperware container with a good seal. Thanks for stopping by! Deb – The Oldest Sister

I Tried your recipe for the garbage disposal refresheners and left them to dry overnight. They did not harden, they just fell apart when I picked them up. Has any one had this problem. ? please let me know how to remedy this, Thanks
Debbie says
Hi Renee! I am so sorry that these fell apart on you. I have made them twice and did not have a problem. The only thing that I could think of was that I packed mine pretty good into the scoop that I used. Hope that helps! Deb – The Oldest Sister

I had the same exact thing happen to me the first batch I made. I re crumbled them and added more lemon juice this time to make them wetter than the first batch and then I packed them really hard! This definitely helped. They are a little fragile, but

This is probably a silly question but do you just throw them into the garbage disposal and turn it on? Water running? I can’t wait to try this, I’m 8 weeks pregnant and can smell everything that goes down the sink, yuck! Thanks ๐
Debbie says
Hi Sarah! Congratulations on having a new little one! Yes, just put one in, run the water and turn the garbage disposal on. The citrusy smell is wonderful! Deb – The Oldest Sister
Sara says
I too was having a problem with them being “crumbly”. It must depend on the amount of moisture (size of lemon, etc). I popped the baking sheet (parchment and all) into the oven at 250 for about 5 minutes, and voila! Dried them all up and no more crumbliness! And my kitchen smelled lovely while they were cooking and cooling.

Hi Sara! What a great idea to bake a little longer. You are one smart cookie! Thanks so much for the tip. Deb – The Oldest Sister

I’ve made quite a few batches of these this week and I can’t seem to get them not to crumble. I tried putting them in the oven as mentioned in the comments and that has helped some but not much. I wonder if I should make them smaller or bake them longer? My first couple batches I let sit out the rest I have been baking.
Debbie says
Hi Kim, Hmmm…trying to think what could be going wrong but am not quite sure. Mine turn out every time. The only suggestion that I can think of is that I really packed my mixture into my scooper. Maybe that’s the answer? Let me know. Thanks! Deb – The Oldest Sister

I made mine last night with a LIME from the fridge and popped one in the disposal a few minutes ago.
The lime fragrance was so fresh that I wanted to pop another one in …lol. This recipe is absolutely awesome , thanks.

Oh this sounds great! I like the idea of having something made ahead with ingredients I already use to clean my disposal now, Thanks so much!

If yours won’t stick together, you can probably just put the powdery end result into a jar and use a teaspoon/scoop and scoop them out that way and drop the powder down the sink while running the water. I couldn’t get “bath bombs” to stick together so I just spoon the powder out, and that works just fine for me. You’ll still get the benefits. Cheers!

Great tip Dani. Thanks so much for sharing!

What a great idea. I just made two batches, one for the house and one for the RV. Sometimes the RV grey water holding tank gets a little funky. I am hoping this helps.

Hi, guys! Silly question: does it have to be a lemon (or, I saw someone mention they used a Lime)? Could I get away with using an orange? I tried another variation on this theme a while ago with dried coffee grounds from our morning cup a’ as the main “scent,” but I think I might like a citrus smell even better. thanks for the info!!
Debbie says
I think orange would be a great smell!
