If I were Maria von Trapp and singing about my favorite things, chocolate strawberries would be near the top of the list. Only I would wish for more chocolate on my strawberries. Once when my daughter was little and we were getting ready to leave church, she came out of her sunday school class with a present for me for Mother’s Day. Her children’s group leaders had prepared a present for the children to give their mothers. In a cute little box, there was a perfect chocolate covered strawberry. She was so excited about that gift because she knew it was something I loved and wanted me to dig into it right away. But first, she wondered, would it be okay if we shared it?I was feeling good that day and she was so cute, so I said yes. I figured sharing meant she would take a bite while we drove home and leave the rest for me. At home, she presented me the box and said she was all done. I opened the box only to find out she had licked off all the chocolate and left me a naked strawberry! I love her, but ewwww!!!! These Heart Shaped Chocolate Strawberries inspired by 1 Fine Cookie are perfect for sharing with the people you love because you can each have one half of the heart. After washing and thoroughly drying the strawberries, remove the leaves. I tore them off by hand. Next cut the strawberries in half, and slice a little V at the top. Turn the strawberries cut side down and insert a toothpick to hold them together. I turned mine right side up again, and filled that little V cut with some Nutella. Like I said, I like a little extra chocolate. You can fill your berries with marshmallow fluff or leave them plain, whatever you prefer. Dry the cut side well with a paper towel and slather it with some melted chocolate. I used semi sweet chocolate chips thinned with 2 Tablespoons of vegetable shortening to make the chocolate shiny and easy to work with. Using a microwave safe bowl, put the chocolate and shortening into the microwave for 1 minute on high. Stir the chocolate chips. They will not be all the way melted. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until chips and shortening are melted and smooth. Don’t over microwave your chocolate. It is best to stir when there are a few lumps of unmelted chocolate and just keep stirring until they melt. When that layer of chocolate has hardened, you can remove the toothpick. The hardened chocolate will hold the two halves together. Lay wax paper under a cooling rack and turn the strawberries over. Pour a spoonful of chocolate over the strawberries, pushing around the edges to get good coverage. After the chocolate on top of the strawberries has hardened, melt red candy melts, using the same method used for the chips (no shortening is needed for candy melts). Drizzle candy melt over the top. These are best eaten within 4-6 hours of being made. These are best stored room temperature until serving.
This pin rocks!
Heart Shaped Chocolate Strawberries

- 2 Tablespoons Shortening
- Red Candy Melts
- Strawberries
- toothpicks
Instructions
- After washing and thoroughly drying the strawberries, remove the leaves. I tore them off by hand.
- Next cut the strawberries in half, and slice a little V at the top. Turn the strawberries cut side down and insert a toothpick to hold them together. I turned mine right side up again, and filled that little V cut with some Nutella.
- Strawberries can also be filled marshmallow fluff or leave them plain, whatever you prefer.
- Dry the cut side well with a paper towel and slather it with some melted chocolate. I used semi sweet chocolate chips thinned with 2 Tablespoons of vegetable shortening to make the chocolate shiny and easy to work with.
- To melt the chocolate using a microwave safe bowl, put the chocolate and shortening into the microwave for 1 minute on high. Stir the chocolate chips. They will not be all the way melted. Microwave in 30 second increments and stir until chips and shortening are melted and smooth. Don't over microwave your chocolate. It is best to stir when there are a few lumps of unmelted chocolate and just keep stirring until they melt.
- When that layer of chocolate has hardened, you can remove the toothpick. The hardened chocolate will hold the two halves together.

Thank you Linda!

Can I just cut them and put the toothpick in and then dip them in the bowl of melted chocolate ?
Sherri says
I can see why you would want to, but then you would have a chocolate heart with a toothpick in it. If you pull the toothpick out while the chocolate is still soft, the strawberry halves slide apart. Sorry, but the extra step is worth it for presentation sake. If you don’t want them heart shaped, you can just dip the strawberries whole. But to get that heart shape, you need to do the two step process. Best of luck with it, Shantel.

Whats the best way to keep the heart shape? I did a test run last night but my chocolate dripped a little and did not keep the shape it should 🙁 please help!
Sherri says
Make sure your chocolate is not too thin or too hot, Cynthia. Also, make sure the bottom layer is completely solid before you remove the tooth pick. Then spoon the chocolate over the strawberries. The toothpick holds things together while the bottom layer hardens. I let mine harden with the bottom side up. Then flipped them over and removed the toothpick. Once the bottom layer is hardened and you have removed the tooth pick, then put the chocolate on top. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. These are best served as soon as possible. Enjoy them!

Thank you Sherri, I was actually putting the chocolate on top first. I will keep your tips in mind for second try! 🙂

Ah, glad we figured it out! That should make all the difference. Best of luck with batch two.

These are great! The only thing I would change is the use of chocolate chips. Chocolate chips contain certain additives that help keep them from melting down nicely, while this may be great for cookies it can make it very hard to deal with anything chocolate dipped. Most people use bakers chocolate, I use Hershey bars because I prefer milk chocolate.
I will definitely be borrowing the rest of your method, these are TOO CUTE!
Sherri says
Glad you like the idea, Jennifer. The shortening helps the texture and meltability for the choco chips. But bars will work just as well and taste terrific! Have a happy Valentine’s Day.
