Make a tie dye tee shirt with Sharpie pins and rubbing alcohol? YES! The colors are vivid and your kids will have a blast making their own designs!
I’m so glad I found pin from The Art Girl Jackie, she combined several techniques to come up with this awesome method.
Supplies Needed
- Pre-Washed or Light Colored Tee Shirt
- I used 91% Alcohol. If you use a lower percent it might not work as well.
- Sharpies – Stay with the color wheel, no brown or black.
Remember that complimentary colors will turn brown when they mix(ex. using blue and orange together)
- Medicine Dropper
- Rubberband
- Plastic Cup
Stretch a section of your tee shirt over the mouth of a plastic cup, place a rubber band around the mouth of the cup to secure the tee shirt material. Use several colored sharpies and make a design. Mine were about the size of a $.50 piece. Remember that the design will spread quickly one you add the rubbing alcohol.
Using your medicine dropper to drip about 10 drops of alcohol and watch your design spread! If your design does not spread out to the edges of the cup, put a few more dots of color and drip more alcohol on it.
I love that you get instant results and no mess!
We made random circles all over the front of our tee shirt. **You need to heat set the colors in the dryer for 15 to 20 minutes before wearing.**
I love the final results! It only took 45 minutes to my this cute tee shirt and clean up was a breeze!

I liked the sharpie tie dye tee shirt great ideal. I have never done one so a question do you get 100% cotton tee shirt and pre wash, after the sharpie tie dye will the color fade out after second wash do I need to do anything to the tee shirt.

Hi Hope!
Yes, a 100% cotton tee shirt works the best. Wash and dry it before you dye it, then place it in the dryer for about 15 minutes when you are done dying it to set the colors.
Have fun making your shirts! Tracy (the middle sister)
