They will scream, they will howl, they will haunt you for more of Twisted Halloween Sugar Cookies. And with looks like these, they will be the first to get devoured! Making these cookies is like playing with edible play dough. Edible play dough that tastes good. Edible play dough that tastes so good, you might not end up with any cookies because you ate all the dough. But if you do manage to hold out for the cookies, you won’t be sorry. This recipe for sugar cookies is so good it made my son’s fourth grade teacher sick.
For reals, like she called in sick the day after my son brought them to school. She asked me to make cookies with her cookie cutter that was the shape of our state when they were doing their unit on our state history and having a special state history day. I asked my son after school if everyone liked them. He said they didn’t get any. That was confusing! When I asked why, he told me the teacher kept them at her desk and ate them all! She was diabetic!!!!! I was so glad when she came back to school later in the week, because we was afraid these might really be killer cookies!
But before I give you all the details on the cookies I want to tell you about a little “party” we are surprising you with! Put on your comfy slippers, grab and drink and settle in, ’cause this collection of great Halloween ideas is going suck you in like a Vampire! That was lame, it was cheesy, but these ideas aren’t. So stick around and check them out. Make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the post to see all the great ideas!
My favorite thing about the recipe I use is the texture of the cookies. Oh, wait, no. My favorite thing about this cookie recipe is that it has almond extract. I love the flavor. Well, no. Really it is the way they keep their shape and don’t spread out into some sort of tie dye cookie. I love how the coil and colors stay distinct. So there are three reasons to love this recipe! I used our favorite recipe for Cream Cheese Sugar Cookies. You can use any recipe you want, but this is my all time favorite!
You will see this idea from Make, Bake and Celebrate is so much easier to do than it looks and all you have to do is change the colors, and presto! You are set for any holiday!
Start by dividing your dough into four equal portions and adding gel food coloring. Gel food coloring results in stronger, brighter colors. I divided my dough into four balls, made a well in the center, added the coloring and then folded the coloring in, kneading until I had consistent color. Make sure to line your counter with wax or parchment paper when doing this to be sure not to get food coloring on your cutting board or counter. You can also do the coloring in your stand mixer.
If you are patient, you can put your four balls of dough wrapped in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for an hour. If you are me not patient, put it in the freezer so the dough will stiffen up a little more and it will be easier to handle.
Once your dough is firm, start rolling the dough into balls. I liked mine about the size of a walnut. It’s not real scientifical, so just play with it and see what works for you.
Now combine your four colors of dough and roll it into a ball. I found that all that rolling in my warm hands got my dough loose again, so I popped it back into the freezer to get it firm enough to roll out into a rope.
To avoid sticking and having the colors run together, I found it helped to have a little pile of flour next to my working surface. I dipped my fingers in whenever he dough got sticky and rolled the multi color balls into a uniform rope. You may notice that the rope in my photo is kind of lumpy and misshapen. That was one of my first, and I share it with you so you won’t feel bad if your first attempts are similar. Or because I didn’t get a good photo of a better one. Once you make the rope, hold one end in place and roll the other to get the twisted look.
Then coil your rope working from the center out.Roll the cookie in sprinkles and bake according to the recipe. Store in an airtight container and enjoy!
This pin really rocks!
